“Add as much cayenne as you can handle, put on your coat and boots and get ready to meet that baby of yours!”
The amount of cayenne in this recipe may look like a lot, but the cream and chocolate subdue it, making for a kick of spice and an empty cup.
TIME/SERVINGS Total Time: 10 mins , Makes: 2 drinks
INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper – for labour – add as much cayenne as you can handle.
- 5 ounces good-quality milk chocolate (use high-end chocolate if possible) , coarsely chopped or you can replace this with sugar and cocoa powder.
INSTRUCTIONS
- Combine milk, cream, and cayenne in a small saucepan over medium heat and cook until simmering, about 4 minutes.
- Add chocolate and whisk until completely melted and well incorporated, about 2 minutes.
- Serve immediately. Enjoy!
Great to eat with a Labour Starting Cookie.

Seriously ladies, I made spicy tacos for a friend of mine and finished off dinner with this cocoa. She left my house at about 9:30 (thinking she had heartburn from all the spice) and by 1:30 a.m. she was holding her new baby boy!
I made this cocoa Saturday late afternoon (12/29/12) and went into labor later that same evening around 8:30 pm! My baby girl was born a few hours later at midnight on 12/30. Thanks for the great recipe!
So glad to hear that it helped! 🙂
Hi there,
I had to let you know that this recipe DEFINITELY worked for me also. I drank it the night before my due date at 8:30pm. By 10:30pm my water broke and I was thrust into a very intense and fast 4 hour labour. Luckily I had planned a home birth as it all happened so quickly. By 2:30am my beautiful baby boy Fox was here with us.
I would like to know if it is common for the labour to be quicker after drinking the hot chocolate? It seems as though the other ladies who commented birthed quickly also. Perhaps it is just a co-incidence. Either way, thanks so much. And to anyone wondering whether to go ahead with this method, be prepared! It will work.
The start of labour is kind of like a domino reaction… if all the pieces are in place, you do that one last, like drink this hot chocolate and it tips the first one and a chain reaction occurs and down go all the dominoes and into labour, you go. If however your body is just not ready, if there are open spaces in your line of dominoes, then you drink the hot chocolate and nothing happens.
That being said, everything that you do that moves your body closer to labour will increase that hormonal interaction between you and baby and to continue our domino analogy, put more and more dominoes in place. Eventually one of things will cause the chain reaction.
This worked for me!! I drank it at 12:00pm, and went into labour around 11:30pm that night.
