A TRUE KNOT: That’s right, babies can come out w A TRUE KNOT: That’s right, babies can come out with a knot in their cord! For many people, a knot might seem scary. This is because the baby receives all of their oxygen and nutrition via the umbilical cord and a potential blockage could mean a potential reduction in these life-sustaining systems. However, in most cases, a knot is not a cause for concern, because of this wonderful substance called Wharton’s jelly! This jelly surrounds the umbilical cord and keeps it lubricated so that if a knot forms, it doesn’t stick and therefore doesn’t cut off any blood flow.
A diet high in fruits and veggies is associated with thicker more protective Wharton's Jelly. Aim for 5-7 plus servings of fruits and veggies daily to have the healthy pregnancy possible.

Also, it must be said, not all true knots are truly harm-free. A knot may be diagnosed in pregnancy after an abnormal fetal heart tracing and it may be a reason to use extra precautions when giving birth. For most people though, true knots are asymptomatic and usually only detected after the baby is born (like this one was!)

There are loads of strange things that happen in p There are loads of strange things that happen in pregnancy. One of the strangest? You grow an entirely NEW ORGAN. YUP!

Interestingly it's made up of both fetal and maternal tissue. One of the physical examples of the deep level of cooperation between you and baby - which allow this new life to occur.

The placenta grows from a few cells into an organ that will eventually weigh about 1 pound. And between 8-12 weeks pregnant, it takes over supporting your baby, with the average being about 10 weeks.

Did you know? When you feel your baby move depends Did you know? When you feel your baby move depends a lot on where your placenta is positioned. If it's in the front between your belly and your baby, you'll likely have to wait a bit longer to feel some first movement, as the placenta acts a bit like insulation.

If this is your first baby, you might be surprised If this is your first baby, you might be surprised to learn that birth isn't over once baby is born! The last stage of labour is when the placenta is delivered.
..
After your baby emerges, your uterus will continue to contract, loosing and shearing away the connection between the wall of the uterus and the placenta. This process generally takes between 20-60 minutes.
..
Skin-to-skin with your baby, and baby nursing will release hormones which help to deliver the placenta. Many hospital allow give a dosage of synthetic oxytocin to encourage the placenta to release more easily.
..
From a maternal health perspective, it's really important that the blood vessels close down strongly - so that postpartum bleeding is limited.
..
You can support this using visualization, baby and love (aka oxytocin).

The magic of the placenta. Let's look deeper at t The magic of the placenta. Let's look deeper at this unsung hero of pregnancy!!
⭐️ It is a gatekeeper and separates your blood from your child’s blood to protect little ones from infection as well as provides antibodies to protect them after they enter our world.
..
⭐️ It is attached to the wall of your uterus and the umbilical cord connects the placenta to your child. Blood passes through the placenta filtering oxygen, glucose, nutrients, harmful substances, removal of carbon dioxide, and waste from your child through the umbilical cord.
..
⭐️ It not only filters what is needed and what isn’t for your baby, but it also produces hormones that are needed during pregnancy.
..
⭐️ Crazy thing - after baby is born we generally just discard it as medical waste. That almost feels disrespectful for something that was SO important to baby's development. Stay tuned and I'll share some alternatives!

Connection between the Placenta & Morning Sickness Connection between the Placenta & Morning Sickness!
Towards the end of the first trimester (around week 10), the placenta takes over the production of progesterone. This helps reduce nausea and vomiting. For many mamas, this equals an end to or at least a reduction in morning sickness.
..
What if you are one of those woman whose morning sickness didn't go away? Well the placenta could still involved.
If you happen to have a higher concentration of a protein called GDF15 in your blood, those frequent bouts of nausea and vomiting may continue for some time.
One study found that women who reported vomiting in the second trimester had a higher level of maternal circulating GDF15 concentrations around week 15 of pregnancy.
..
The good news? Researchers speculate that high levels of GDF15 could mean that the placenta is developing properly. It could also help explain why some women have hyperemesis gravidarum, which is an extreme form of morning sickness.
