Pregnancy is an exciting journey, but let’s be honest—those early weeks are often full of questions. Every little symptom can make you wonder if everything is on track. If you’re in your first trimester and looking for reassurance, we’re here to help you spot the signs of a healthy pregnancy. From small changes you can feel to others you might not expect, many signs show your pregnancy is going well.
In this guide, we’ll break down the healthy pregnancy symptoms that often signal things are progressing as they should. Whether it’s that surge of nausea, feeling more tired than ever, or even your emotions being all over the place, we’re covering what you need to know to help ease your mind.
1. You Have NO Symptoms
Sometimes, early pregnancy doesn’t come with the classic pregnancy symptoms. You might expect that wave of morning sickness, the fatigue, the cravings—only to feel…completely normal. And that can be nerve-racking! But if this sounds like you, don’t worry—you’re not alone.
For some women, feeling great during the first trimester is entirely normal and can even be a sign of a healthy pregnancy. No symptoms don’t mean anything is wrong; rather, you might just be one of the lucky ones.
Of course, if you’re concerned, there’s no harm in checking with your healthcare provider. But as long as those hormone levels are rising as they should, you can rest assured. Every pregnancy is unique, and while many women experience symptoms, it’s completely normal not to.
2. Breast Tenderness
During the first trimester, one common sign of pregnancy is breast tenderness. Those rising hormone levels—especially progesterone—often bring about noticeable changes in the breasts. You might feel increased sensitivity, soreness, or even see a change in size. If you’ve been wondering why your breasts are suddenly sore or seem bigger than usual, you can thank progesterone for that!
These changes vary from person to person, too. For some, they might be subtle; for others, like me, they can be pretty dramatic. But whether your breast changes are minor or major, they’re a great sign that your pregnancy is progressing healthily.
3. Elevated Basal Body Temperature
If you’ve been tracking your basal body temperature (BBT), you might notice that it stays elevated throughout your first trimester. This temperature increase, which started shortly after ovulation, often remains steady in early pregnancy due to higher levels of progesterone. Signs of a healthy pregnancy can include an elevated BBT, which can be a subtle but reliable indicator of a healthy, ongoing pregnancy—especially reassuring for those who closely track their cycles. So, if your BBT is still elevated well past your missed period, it’s another positive indicator that things are progressing as they should!
4. Fatigue
There’s tiredness, and then there’s first-trimester exhaustion—the kind that makes you feel like you’re out of steam by mid-afternoon. This extreme fatigue is a common healthy pregnancy symptom because your body’s working overtime to support your baby’s development, especially as major organs are forming. The best advice? Don’t fight the tiredness; listen to your body and rest when needed. I have a few tips to help manage the exhaustion and even a hack to boost your energy!
5. Frequent Urination
Noticed that you’re suddenly making more bathroom trips? Even before your baby starts putting pressure on your bladder, you might find yourself needing to pee more often. This is actually a common early pregnancy symptom, caused by a combination of factors.
As your uterus starts to expand, it takes up a bit more space—even in these early weeks. Plus, there’s an increase in blood flow to your kidneys, making them work harder and faster. This frequent urination is just another sign that your body is adjusting beautifully to support your growing baby.
6. Increased Sense of Smell
Many pregnant women experience a heightened sensitivity to smells, and guess what? It’s all thanks to hormonal changes—specifically an increase in estrogen levels during the first trimester, which can amplify certain odors.
The scientific theory behind this sensitivity suggests that it may help pregnant women be more cautious about their food choices, encouraging them to eat healthier. This increased awareness of smells is just another normal response, signaling that your body is adapting to the changes of pregnancy.
7. Visible Skin Changes
Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also impact your skin in various ways. For instance, you may notice that your areolas have darkened slightly, or you might experience more breakouts than usual. On the other hand, many women enjoy the renowned “pregnancy glow.”
This glow occurs because your skin produces more oil and there’s increased blood flow to your face and cheeks, giving you that radiant appearance. Whether you’re experiencing breakouts or the glow, these skin changes are completely normal and often signal a healthy pregnancy. These pregnancy symptoms indicate that your body is simply adjusting to the incredible work of nurturing new life!
8. Morning Sickness
Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy can be really tough to deal with! While it’s definitely uncomfortable, it often serves as a sign that your pregnancy hormones, particularly Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG), are on the rise. Morning sickness is very common and is usually seen as a reassuring indicator of a healthy pregnancy that everything is progressing as it should.
But if you’re one of those women who hasn’t felt any nausea, don’t stress! Approximately 20% of women with healthy pregnancies skip morning sickness altogether, so it’s not a requirement for a healthy pregnancy.
For the 80% who do experience that queasy feeling and find themselves dry-heaving at the most inconvenient times, it is completely normal.
There are different methods to ease these pregnancy symptoms. One is an energy rebalancing technique that can help your body manage the hormonal changes more effectively. Here’s a unique approach to hundreds of women seeking relief from pregnancy nausea.
9. Mild Cramps
In early pregnancy, mild cramping that feels similar to menstrual cramps is usually a normal sign that your uterus is expanding. Experiencing some mild discomfort without any bleeding is typically nothing to worry about.
However, if you do experience bleeding, it’s important to consult with your doctor or midwife, as it can either be normal or a cause for concern.
To alleviate muscle cramps, gentle stretching, staying well-hydrated, and applying a warm compress can be quite effective. These methods help support your uterus—which is essentially a muscle—allowing it to grow more comfortably. When your muscles are well-hydrated and have good blood circulation, they can adapt to changes more easily.

10. Lower Back Pain
As your uterus stretches to accommodate your growing baby, some women may experience mild lower back pain.
While it can be uncomfortable, this is typically a normal part of pregnancy. Engaging in gentle stretching and light movement can help alleviate some of that discomfort. Listening to your body and incorporating activities like yoga or simple stretches can promote relaxation and relieve tension in your back. Remember, while this sensation is common, it’s always a good idea to check in with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about your pregnancy symptoms.
11. Mood Swings
Feeling emotional during pregnancy is completely normal! Just last week, a member of my pregnancy group shared that she took a pregnancy test after watching the new Celine Dion documentary and ended up crying her eyes out. While the story was touching, she realized that her intense reaction wasn’t typical for her.
The hormonal fluctuations that occur in early pregnancy can lead to more pronounced emotional highs and lows. While this can be challenging, it’s often a sign that your hormone levels are rising as they should. For some women, this might mean tears come easily, while others may find themselves feeling more irritable or frustrated. And for a lucky few, they might experience a more even emotional keel.
If you’re looking for ways to ease the emotional ups and downs, I have a video that offers some helpful tips!
12. Food Aversions and Cravings
Pregnancy hormones also influence your sense of taste and smell, which can lead to some surprising cravings and aversions. While balanced nutrition remains essential during this time, it’s normal to experience these fluctuations in your preferences.
Cravings can range from the classic pickles and ice cream to unexpected combinations that you never thought you’d enjoy. Understanding that these cravings are part of your body’s way of adapting to pregnancy can help you navigate this unique journey. It’s important to listen to your body, but also to aim for a balanced diet whenever possible. Finding ways to satisfy your cravings while still prioritizing nutritious foods can make for a healthier pregnancy experience.
13. Increased Vaginal Discharge
Increased blood flow to the pelvic area during pregnancy stimulates your body’s mucous membranes, leading to a common occurrence known as leukorrhea. This thin, milky discharge is typically pasty, clear to whitish in color, and odorless, serving an important protective function.
Leukorrhea helps safeguard the birth canal from infection by maintaining a healthy balance of vaginal flora. While some women may feel concerned about this change, it’s actually a reassuring sign that your body is responding well to pregnancy. The presence of leukorrhea indicates that everything is progressing as it should, providing an additional layer of protection for both you and your developing baby.
14. Mild Bloating and/or Constipation
Pregnancy hormones can slow down digestion, and this effect can vary widely from one woman to another. Some may experience increased bloating, while others might struggle with constipation, and some might simply notice that their meals take longer to digest than usual.
To help alleviate these digestive changes, it’s important to stay hydrated, which can promote smoother digestion. Additionally, drinking peppermint or ginger tea can be soothing, and increasing your fiber intake can help keep things moving in your digestive tract.
While these changes can certainly be uncomfortable, they are a normal part of your body’s adjustment to accommodate your growing baby. Understanding that these digestive fluctuations are common can make it easier to manage them as you navigate this unique journey.
15. Vivid Dreams
Hormonal fluctuations and shifts in your sleep patterns during pregnancy can lead to vivid dreams. Many women notice that their dreams become more intense and memorable, especially during the first trimester.
In my own experience, my dreams were so bizarre and vivid that I found myself keeping a journal to record them! This is completely normal and part of the pregnancy process. The combination of hormonal changes, emotional shifts, and altered sleep can create a dream landscape that is both fascinating and sometimes puzzling. Embracing this unique aspect of pregnancy can add an interesting layer to the experience as you navigate these changes.
Fortunately, many first trimester healthy pregnancy symptoms begin to fade around 12 to 14 weeks of pregnancy, so hang in there!
